Okay, we are moving to maui around august to january. Where do I stay. My husband will be working in Lahaina but it is really hard to find a private place with some yard for our 2 and 5 year old. I have seen a lot of affordable places in Haiku that would keep the kids entertained and the budget low. Is it ridiculous for my husband to drive to Lahaina every day from Haiku?? Avoiding the condo/hotel scenario. Jill

IMO it is way to far to commute from haiku to lahaina both in time and gas money. take a furnished vacation rental for a month or two so you don't have to worry about rushing. then while you settle in and hubby goes to work you can look around and get something that suits you.

edit...just reread your post are you only going to be here for 5 or 6 months? most places are 1 year rental you may want to just do vacation place the whole 6 months. the one thing about the condos is they are right by the beach and have a pool. lots of entertainment for the kids. you won't have to drive them somewhere to get wet

naplili is lovely. you will really have to drive "anywhere" other than your main area that you are staying. the best thing for you to do is google map it. you can "drive" the roads and see just how far out a place really is. eac place really has it's own charms and services. some places there is just the quickie mart unless you drive a few miles. some beaches are more kid friendly than others. lahaina can be as "icky" as kihei but truly both places are exceptional. I think kihei has the better beaches, excluding baby beach in lahaina for small kids. check out the south end of kihei. in fact depending on your budget there are some killer condo's in kihei's south end. yes for the short haul a furnished condo is the way to go. you will have a great time no matter where you are. VRBO I think is the site where owners of condos advertise their places for rent. you could probably find something great there. you can email or p.m. me with an address if I know the condo I can let you know if it is clean, nice and close to shopping and fun for the kids.
