hi,
we are going to be in Maui for 9 nights in about a month.....we bought our hotel/car combo from costco and the package included a full size car.

i called costco today and they said that for 230 more, i could upgrade to a jeep wrangler for the duration.

my question is:

Is it better to pay the 230 or would it be better if i just slip the guy at the counter a 50 and hope for a 'free' upgrade?

Personal opinion, I've never thought Jeeps are worth it, they have a fairly rough ride but it all depends on where you plan on driving while you are here.

With that said, slipping a guy a 50 is way overboard - 20 should suffice.

Depends on what you want. When I went to Maui a few years back, we got a small compact (think Geo or similar) car, and given the small size of the island, the high cost of gas, and the narrow roads there, I was quite satisfied with the small car. This was for 2 people, neither one particularly a large person.

If you spend a lot of time in the car, I think you are missing the point of Maui - and I'm a car guy...

No, the gas will cost you an arm and a leg for the Wrangler. Don't slip anybody a $50... this isn't Tijuana.

i don't care about the difference in gas prices/consumption.
why not 'slip the guy 20 or 50"?

Because that's disrespectful. You're saying to the guy that you think he'll take a bribe.

I completely disagree - if he/she doesn't want the cash, they can respectfully decline. Want a better room or suite, offer extra - want to get into a club, offer up some cash to the doorman. Want to upgrade your car - offer cash.

You are going to miss all of the shots you do not take.

I don't like jeeps, so I'm not helpful there.

What I would do is: I'd wait until I was at the rental counter rather than pre-pay for an upgrade (unless it was an awesome upgrade, I tend to prepay upgrades more for hotels) - and they usually try to upsell you into another car at that time, and it is likely going to be less than the amount they are telling you now, and it is likely negotiable.

It's rare I rent a car on a neighbor island and as I tell them my name they don't already start mentioning other cars at fairly reasonable prices - they get incented to get you into a higher category of car. Of course, nothing works if they are out of the car you want.

right.
i called the company directly (on the island) and they said it would be 78 dolllars A DAY more to upgrade to a jeep wrangler!!!
total of about 650! Stupid right?

i'm afraid that calling costco and paying 230 is the cheapest/surest way to guarantee the wrangler.....but a slid of a 20 or 50 may be the cheapest...although if they're out, then i'm SOL-JWF.
