I hear some people go and think, "I woke up early for this?" Then they finally get to the top on a morning where it's blissful and understand why they woke up.

How do we avoid cloud cover. Is there a number to call? Best months to go?

TIA!

Alley

plan to go the first morning that you are here so you are still on your home time and don't feel like you are getting up special. you will be up early anyway. the experience is up to personal interpretations I am not sure if there is a better month to go or not. think everyday would be special

Dress warmly & take blankets for hotel - Allow 3 hours to get to the top & getting ready.
Mountain Top Parking is very limited & SO hiking in the dark is very possible ( take a FLASHLIGHT )

Best time of viewing was " last night " - ' Last Week" or "Last Time WE were here "

Best time is the here & now - - Get in place MININUM 30 minutes before Sunrise, Alot can be said for NOT staying "crammed like sardines" into the observation deck with everyone else that are cold - cranky & complaining that they saw better sunrises at the movies !!!

This is not the movies - this is God Gift to Anyone & Everyone that wants to watch His free Light show . .

Just before Sunrise - Close your Mouth AND Open You Eyes & Heart - - Let the Experience(s) enter you & change you forever

This is alot like the Road to Hana - Proper Perperation to enjoy the Whole Trip Experience will make the event better in so many ways - " ENJOY

ALL THAT MAUI HAS TO OFFER YOU. . ."

Haleakala National Park - Sunrise and Sunset (U.S. National Park Service)

will give you some helpful information. what i like to do is get there super-super early, like by a few hours, and get a parking spot near the stairs of the summit. take a nap in your car, it will never feel more comfortable. wake up about 45 minutes before sunrise and go claim your seat at the lookout, i would suggest not only bringing things to put on you to keep warm, but something to sit on too, to keep you off of the cold concrete. remember that unless you are taking a picture of someone in front of the sunset, your flash is useless and is better left off. enjoy!

If for some reason you can't motivate yourself to get up at 3am (what time you'd need to leave) then it's OK to watch the sunset there instead. That's what we did on our trip out to Maui last month. Sunset wasn't busy at all, plenty of parking and places to perch ourselves along the lava rocks.
The sunset was absolutely beautiful and awe-inspiring. I'm sure sunrise is even neater with the sun rising up through the clouds vs going down but it is less cloudier in the afternoon and warmer. I had on cropped jeans, tennies, and a lightweight hoodie jacket. It was cold for sure but worked well enough.

You might want to track the local weather for a few days and compare it to the views from this live-cam at the crater: Haleakala Crater Live Camera The sunrise from up there is often over the clouds -- not so much the water. Hana is the better place to watch the sun rise over the water.

The weather -- and cloud cover -- at Haleakala can vary a great deal from day-to-day and hour-to-hour. We've hiked down Sliding Sands Trail on a beautiful, sunny afternoon only to battle gusting winds and sleet on the way out.

Enjoy your stay.
