According to the following link Mazda ranks 12th best out of 34 auto makes. The most reliable makes are Scion, Acura, Toyota, & Honda; Mazda got similar marks to Kia and Lincoln.
I owned the Mazda 626 years ago and it never gave me any trouble. Traded it in for a van. We have a Mazdaspeed3, no problems. I'd still have my Mazda MPV van (115,000 miles on it) if my son hadn't wrecked it. I'd say they are very reliable.
I've had 3 Mazdas- a GLC and two 626's (one manual transmission and one automatic transmission). The automatic version of the 626 was a piece of crapola. The Ford transmission that came with the car was so prone to breakdown that it was the worst car I ever owned. The manual transmission version was a fine car. You have to go by the model and year to know the answer.
Yeah... my grandma had a '99 (I think?) 626 with an automatic that never gave her any problems. Then again, she did drive it like, well, a grandma. The only issue she had with it was a sucky paint job, which I think was a common issue many Mazdas back then.
If all goes according to the current plan, our next car will be another Mazda.
Since someone repped me for the above post, I'll go ahead and note that the next two cars we bought were Mazdas, a Speed6 and a regular 6. The Speed6 has since been reluctantly sold, but we still have the regular 6, a 2004 with a rare V6/manual powertrain combo. It now has 75K miles on it with no non-scheduled maintenance except to replace a leaky gasket exhaust pipe gasket. Runs like brand-new. My wife loves that car and will almost certainly run it into the ground before letting me replace it. At this rate that won't happen for another 10 years unless it succumbs to typical Snow Belt rust before then.
And since you've reopened this thread, I'll throw in that my 2006 Mazda3 still looks brand new, and runs almost like brand new at 95,000 miles.
No doubt I'll hate myself for typing that sentence. *looking for some wood to knock on*
The only thing I dislike about the car is the tires. Those low-profile tires with their skinny little sidewalls last about 20 minutes before the sidewall splits or cracks. Harumph. Apparently the wear on the rear tires especially is from the way the car is designed to give it sportier handling. Makes you wonder what Mazda is thinking -- it's OK if your tires blow out every 25,000 miles as long as you feel like you're driving a sports car?
