My husband is finishing his PhD soon and is looking at the job possibilities at St Jude. I've read that Bartlett/Arlington/Germantown are all nice areas, but I'm concerned about the commute time from there. My husband is an avid biker and is used to being able to ride his bike to work. I don't think that would be possible in Memphis.
Anyway, can you recommend some areas that are closer to St Jude with good school? We have three kids. 8,4,1yr.

Thanks!

Are you willing to private school? If not, Snowden Elementary in Midtown is probably your best bet if you can get in the Optional Program. You may want to look at Idlewild Elementary also with the Optional program. Most good public schools are not in biking distance from St Jude. Richland and Grahamwood (optional) are also good choices, with a reasonable driving commute to St Jude.

There's a Montessori school on Mud Island. I have no idea really what that means (for instance, what grades are covered?) because I don't have kids... just thought I'd add that option.

I really can't comment on the options for schools, but I would suggest that you take a look at the homes on Mud Island if limiting your husband's commute time is a priority. Based on what I've seen from drives through the neighborhood, it would seem to be a fine place for kids; multiple parks (with playgrounds), Mississippi Greenbelt Park, seemingly minimal safety concerns.

ZIP for all of downtown, including mud island, is 38103. Most single family homes are on the island (technically a peninsula). Most real estate sites allow you to view search results on a map.
