"When Louise Blais, Canadian consul general for the Southeast, made her first trip to Memphis in April, she met with Memphis in May officials to pitch Canada as this year’s honored country.

Blais said she wanted to see Canada participate in Memphis in May as an opportunity to talk about Canada including what it’s like today, the people of Canada and how important the country is to the state of Tennessee.
Canada is the No. 1 trade partner with the state, exporting $8.7 billion worth of Tennessee goods and generating more than 160,000 Tennessee jobs.

“I know they have their own process to make decisions, but we’ve certainly made it well known to them that Canada would be honored and delighted,” she said in April. “We respect the process and we’re hopeful that our turn will come very soon.”

And it did come soon. Friday, Memphis in May officials announced Canada would be the honored country for the festival’s 40th year.

Just moved from Canada to Memphis. Interesting story.

Canada imports a lot of goods from China and the USA because they are generally noncompetitive in the world market (very high labor costs and they put all their eggs in the commodity bucket). There manufacturing sector has been hollowed when the loonie was at or over par with the US Dollar.

What is Canada sending to Tennessee? Canada mainly exports commodities. I know West Fraser has their US headquarters in Memphis.
