Hi

I'm moving to Memphis next month with my family. Based on the previous threads in this forum we are considering Germantown & Collierville areas. We are looking for good neighborhoods and schools.

Can anyone please recommend good middle school in Germantown & Collierville areas with many kids of Indian origin, so my child can fit in.

Thank you

They are all good, you can't go wrong with any school in either suburb. There is no "bad" school in either. Shelby Co is not known for it's diversity, however I would guess schools out that way have a fair share of ethnicities, if anything because FedEx is headquartered out there and brings in people from all over the world.

Remember that you would be looking for homes in the Germantown school district, not those called Germantown but part of the SCS.

Anyone owning in Germantown has the right to Germantown district schools. "Germantown Elem" "Germantown Middle" and "Germantown HS" are NOT Germantown district schools, they are Shelby.

It's ridiculous and confusing. Germantown District is Riverdale, Houston, Dogwood, and Farmington.

According to GreatSchools, Houston High in Germantown is 8% Asian.

Collierville High is listed as being 4% Asian.

In comparison, the most diverse private school in the area is probably Lausanne, which is 22% Asian. 63 students are from India, which is about 7% of the school (it's a K-12th school).

True, but the Germantown SCS schools are still good as well. Great Schools rates GHS 7 out of 10.

To the OP: the back story is that there used to be 2 separate school systems - Memphis City (only within Memphis city proper) and Shelby County (everything else, all the suburbs, all the rural areas). Two years ago, they decided to merge the two. The suburbs did not want to join with Memphis City (an overall bad system) so all suburbs started their own districts. Germantown Elem, Middle, and High schools were not allowed to become a part of Germantown Municipal School District, for many reasons. The Germantown families with students there were given the option to stay there if they want, even though the school is not a part of their city, or they could transfer their children to any school in the new Germantown system. For me, if I was paying property taxes in Germantown, I would want my kids to attend Germantown schools. Even if Germantown Elem, MS, and HS are still good, they are now a part of the Shelby Co System, which I personally would not want to be a part of (if I was a Germantown resident).

I may be a non-issue for you, because I'm not sure that new residents to Germantown are given the option - I think it may only be an option for families grandfathered in, families attending one of those 3 schools before the merge.
