I realize that Memphis is the mecca for barbecue, but I need to find a place that has what I grew up with ... a good vinegar based barbecue pork sandwich like the kind you get only in the Carolinas.

Any suggestions?

I know the Nashville area has a more vinegar based barbecue sauce, but I'm not aware of anyplace in Memphis that serves that kind of sandwich as it's primary fare. You could probably order it at some places (Whole Hog on Germantown Parkway offers several different kinds of sauces), but you would be swimming upstream for the most part looking for that around Memphis.

The Carolina's use a mustard based sauce (which I like) and put coleslaw on their barbecue (which I don't like).
Ketchup based/Mustard based, all have a degree of vinegar in them. I think you want a mustard based sauce.
It's just a finishing sauce. Go to your local grocery store and buy a bottle of Sticky Fingers Carolina sauce and get a take out BBQ sandwhich and knock yourself out.

Drive over to Little Rock and check out Sims Barbeque. I think it's exactly what you're looking for. Short of that, I can't think of a single place in the Mid-South that serves bbq with that kind of flavor.

Central BBQ. Funny thing, I just went to Central BBQ Friday night and decided to try their vinegar based sauce. I did not like the vinegary taste but this is obviously what you are looking for
I am sure you would have to request that they do not sauce your sandwich and you could add the vinegar based sauce instead of their standard sauce. Let us know if you like it...

See, Memphis barbeque tastes very different than any other barbeque in the world! It isn't really a vinegary taste but is a smokey and sweet taste. Interstate in the airport and almost over the border is the BEST and I would highly suggest that.

Post Is there still a Leonards pit bbq around?

I used to think that their pulled pork sauce wasn't as sweet as most of the others.........that is why it wasn't my favorite. I didn't care for NC's bbq, but then again, they don't seem to like ours either. Probably more a case of what you are used to
