Okay, so I know this is strange but I have a sociology assignment about clowns. The assignment is to ask people if they are over 40 or under 40, and then how they feel about clowns. Are they funny and silly to you? Do they scare you? Intimidating maybe? When I see a clown, I will probably laugh, but then if i were in crowd of people and the clown came up to me, I might retreat into my overly self-conscious norm in thinking "why pick me out of all these people?"

As a kid...
As an adult...

Too many intimidating actors/child predators dressed as clowns ie John Wayne Gacy etc.
...of course, there ARE safe individuals that just want to make kids laugh, but...

A clown suit easily can hide anger/evil under a guise of fun.

Can't stand clowns. Didn't like them as a child, don't like them as an adult.

They're just plain creepy. The face is a distortion, you can't read it. Who knows what is going on behind the makeup or the mask.

Surprisingly, I never had a strong fear of clowns.

I had a friend who had a friend that was deathly afraid of clowns. He would go into shock, and cry.

Clowns don't even amuse me. I just ask them to make me a giraffe out of a balloon, and then I'm gone
.

My wife is afraid of Clowns, and blames Stephen King's Novel, It. A phobia for clowns is quite common. The reasons for this are unclear, but I am sure it's not all Mr. King's fault.

I have seen a telefilm on clowns in my childhood, it was about their personal life that how they make everyone smile but back stage they are very sad and helpless due to so many troubles of his life and the rude behaviour of his boss he suicides. And then his soul turn to evil and he took the revenge from all those who have hurted him. That part has really scared me and uptill now I am afraid of them.

I know I've enjoyed the antics of clowns before, but always from a distance. I've never felt comfortable with people in disguise, even as a child...The best "clowns" to me, and the ones I've always enjoyed watching are the three stooges.

I don't remember feeling any particular way about clowns as a small child, but somewhere around my teens, I really started to find them creepy. No actual fear, just a moment of "ugh" and move on. I am over 40, dangit.

I'm neither over nor under 40-because I'm 40, on the dot.

Clowns are offputting to me, on a sensory level-I dislike the appearance, behavior/antics, sounds, etc.
They disturb me, the garish application of cosmetics & garb & accessories repels me viscerally.
It's an aesthetic that turns me off in countless ways, but if it delights other people, then great for them-just leave me out of it, please.
Masks/disguises really bother me, too-I like to be able to see the face & I don't like to wear masks, either-they cause me to panic.

Being lighthearted & amusing is fine (just spare me the clown thing).

I felt they were creepy and intimidating when I was a child. Now I just think they are annoying and stupid.

I don't see "funny" in clowns anywhere.

I am over 40.
