There is no convincing scientific evidence that antidepressants "work". Some people believe they work, and that may make them "function better" (just like other beliefs "help" other people function) and you are welcome to believe your brother is one of them. But that is pure anecdote.

The key lies in the delay of the onset of action. SSRI's increase available serotonin very quickly, but it always takes 5-10 days for the person to feel better. That timeframe coincides with how long it takes for neurogenesis...
