Our comprehensive review of the major strands of research on serotonin shows there is no convincing evidence that depression is associated with, or caused by, lower serotonin concentrations or activity.

The meta analysis did not find that serotonin levels weren't involved. It found that there was no consistent evidence of a causal association between levels of serotonin and depression. Some studies showed there was an association and some that there wasn't.....Either way, we don't know if low serotonin is a cause of depression, or if it's a result of depression....(Eg- fever is associated with infection. Does infection cause fever, or does fever cause infection?)
Psychiatric pathology is no doubt very complex and it's probably a little too simplistic to think one lousy chemical holds the key to the problem.

And yet that's what psychiatry has been selling for what...4 decades?

All medical knowledge evolves over time. And you can’t just dismiss that many people have been helped by antidepressants, my brother being one. So it’s not like they are now saying “we were completely wrong about everything”. And this is just one study.

Like I've written before-- 1000 subjects selected randomly and given Vit C will show no benefits. 1000 subjects with scurvy will show great improvement. Anti-depressants that work via serotonin effects, may work only in those pts with problems with serotonin, while having no effect in other depressed pts.
We can't discount the studies that show they do have beneficial effects. Our job is to figure out why some studies say they work and some say they don't...Is it flaws in the studies or flaws in the drug paradigm?
For the individual case, the proof is in the pudding. If they work for you, keep on using them. If they don't, try something else.

So you’re implying it’s all in the peoples head who say they are helped with them? I don’t believe that for a second. I can see the difference they made in my brother.
