Two reasons to choose the Benz.
The Range Rover will depreciate as fast as a rock thrown off a cliff (and has about as much reliability as a Yugo).
New ones don't have the reliability issues that older ones had, and even my older ones were reliable.
No, you can show surveys that list RRs at the bottom, due to more problems per 100 cars than many other marques, but, if you look at those numbers and compare them, to , say, 5-8 years ago, they are as reliable as the most reliable Honda from 5-8 years ago, and no one would say that a 5 year old Honda is as unreliable as a Yugo... And I'd definitely rather have a Range Rover than a 5-8 year old Honda.
If I was single in my 20's, I would like the G63. Being that I'm in my early 50's, I'm really not into "bling". The G63 is nothing more than a fad. It's just the yuppie crowd trying to act tough with their 1970's military style jeep that stands out. It's the same mentality that drew people to Hummers.
The Range Rover is an elegant smooth vehicle with class. Young people won't like it because it's not unique enough and doesn't draw enough attention. For those of us who don't have anything to prove, we prefer the RR.
I don't like to drive what everyone else is driving. The Range Rover is much more popular than the G-wagon, which is why I would choose the G-wagon.
+1 -- I see five (or more) Range Rovers for every one G-wagen. I like the G-wagen because of its military roots, and that adapted as it has aged, not a modern lifestyle vehicle, which is what the Range Rover has become. If you want that, buy the GL as that is more analogous to a Range Rover, whereas the G is set apart as a vehicle that occupies a unique niche.
