Young Mexican police chief fired after reportedly fleeing to U.S. - Yahoo! News (http://news.yahoo.com/s/yblog_thelookout/20110307/us_yblog_thelookout/young-mexican-police-chief-fired-after-reportedly-fleeing-to-u-s - broken link)
Well I find something very surreptitious about this young lady, what I don't know ,but knowing that it is a perilous position and situation for someone that young or anyone for that matter and then to suddenly seek asylum to the U.S. anybody care to comment on this.
Well a lot of people think she had it planned this way all along and just used the small town police chief as a ticket to the U.S. but I don't buy it.
What I think happened is she was just young and naive, thought that she could remain neutral and as long as she didn't bother the cartels they wouldn't bother her. She knew that working against the cartels was a death sentence. When she took office she made it very clear that fighting the cartels was a federal responsibility and her officers (mostly women and unarmed) would act more as community helpers. She made public statements that she would not carry a weapon and would not fight the cartels.
I think she found out that that wasn't good enough for the cartels, that they wanted her to actively work for them and remaining neutral was not an option. And with that she realized the job was a terminal illness, for if you are working for one cartel you are working against another cartel.

She was a 21 year old clueless young girl who, like Divertodd62 said, didn't know what she was getting into. When she found out she could be killed before she was 22, she thought it was better to find safer ground. There has already been a MX police chief seeking asylum in the U.S. and so far the U.S. has denied it.
Nope. From what I've read in the news, she took her kid to a hospital across the border because for some reason Mexico doesn't have any hospitals. Taking her kid across the border was used as a cover to seek asylum and now she has been fired.
- she wanted to have a police force composed mainly of female officers who would focus on "community relations". She thought that if she ignored real crimes the cartels would ignore her, obviously this is not the case.
- she disarmed the force, it's officers were unarmed. The unarmed "British bobby"/"Dixon of Dock Green" nonsense dosent even work in the UK and it certainly does not work in Mexico.
Marisol was a prime example of someone who has has their nose buried in a textbook for so long that they have no idea of how things really work in the real world. A police force that focuses on "community policing" and trying to emulate unarmed British bobbies is not the kind of police force that is needed in Mexico ...
