People act like there are alternatives to Mexican vacation spots which are safer, but they are not comparable. Going to say Florida is not the same as going to Mexico. Going to Costa Rica is not the same. Its different places with different good and bad points. So to say would you go or not is the wrong way to look at it. If what Mexico offers is borderline interesting to you, well maybe the crime tips the scales and you go elsewhere. It's just a factor to consider, I don't get people deciding first on potential for crime as to where they will go. That's a boring vacation waiting to happen

Mexico is like Chicago, it gets bad press because of the crime stats...But...Stay your as$ out of the bad areas and enjoy the excellent, fun, safe areas.

Does it ever occur to anyone that there's like 20 million visitors a year to Mexico and only a handful die? If you stay out of sketchy areas, you're probably literally hundreds of times more likely to get a heart attack this year or crash your car this week. I don't get it.

Yes.

I am in Puerto Vallarta right now.

A couple that left the condo complex I'm staying at today surprisingly drove here and are driving back to Portland. They're ferrying from Mazatlan to Cabo to drive up the Baja Peninsula, but still. They acted as if it's no big deal and not dangerous.

People enjoy being dramatic and afraid, and they are encouraged to be so by quite a bit of regular media.

Yeah, I would go.

I think I'd go to Cuba first though. No hard feelings Mexico.

I don't enjoy that, but I also knew that I was a potential mugging candidate as I boarded the public bus at the base of Cristo Redentor in Rio de Janeiro. I like a drama free vacation. Funny stories are exempted.

I'd still go. Do your homework there are areas to avoid and lot more areas to be in.

People need to realize that Mexico is much more than just a beach.

I don't need to fly 14 hours or so to Europe to get a great dose of historic architecture or culture. I can do that in Mexico for a fraction of the price and add on top of that the amazing beaches and gastronomy..
