But if you want the beach then Puerto Vallarta/Los Cabos would be more suitable. I would recommend Puerto Vallarta instead of Cabos because you didn't like the Playa del Carmen/Tulum area.

Please visit the states of Oaxaca and Chiapas, they're awesome.

Anyway it's pretty easy to get around with bus and flight. Buses are generally reliable (I travelled by bus from Riviera Maya all the way to Mexico City, on a 3 week long trip) and there are great deals on budget airlines Vivaaerobus/Volaris too.
Thanks for the excellent suggestions!

It's been a while since I've been there, but Cancun is a very nice, comfortable, welcoming city. (But a bit on the expensive side for Mexico.) And you can even go to the beach if you want to.

I don't recommend trying to tie in Yucatan with central Mexico in the same trip. There is too much to see in the Yucatan to spend that long on a bus.

Pick one of the four major regions and draw out an itenerary

1) Cancun, Merida, Coba, Tulum, Chichen Itza, and Sian Ka'an‎ are enough for even a long trip. If you have three weeks then see some even more obscure ruins like those on the Guatemala border.

2) Southern Mexico: Oaxaca, isthmus, Palenque, and Chiapas (San Cristobal)

3) Mexico City and the cradle of Independence, San Miguel de Allende and Guanajato (cultural center) or Taxco.

4) Guadalajara, possibly Zacatecas, Tequila, and Puerto Vallarta

I would like to do the same thing...being an Oregonian. I would like to pack up my laptop, but I also have 2 dogs so it would be difficult to find a place that would be suitable.

My choice would be PV, south of town. I have been to Zihuatanejo, and it just didn't feel as safe (note though, I was travelling as a single gal)...they definitely have more of a drug industry down there. In Z they inspect the taxis headed out of town to the airport to make sure the taxis aren't being hijacked by cartel, apparently that is a problem.

I haven't ventured north of PV, but I do hear good things. Have a blast, I'm so jealous!!!

I am a wagon master for Caravanas de Mexico and I escort RV's all over the place. To me the best place is melaque about 5.5 hours drive south of PV or just north of Manzanillo. Its like PV was back in the 40's & 50s. RV Parks, noice small hotels along the beach and no time share salesmen.

Thank you for the insight. What is the name of the main town in Melaque? Is that San Patricio? What's the best way to get there?

Huh? Did I miss something? Last year we drove that route from San Antonio to Michoacan via Laredo and while it may not be a pretty sight, I just didn't find anything terrifying about it(except for the expensive toll roads) Did you do the tolls? It was actually a nice drive and we even stopped in a few cities along the way.

We are actually doing it again in December but now I wonder if I am missing something, like I am too passive about dangers. We only drive so we can have a car to get around when we are there.

San Particio and Melaque ..... the same thing. Best way to get here depends on where you are coming from. Most people fly into Manzanillo airport (ZLO) and take a taxi

Nuevo Laredo is OK.
