Man, I was not aware of the issue they were having with seaweed.
The beaches are pretty much unswimmable! That kinda ruined the trip to be honest. I had high expectations for the beaches.
I take it that's what happens when tons of sewage are dumped in the ocean daily. Before all the hotel development, there was no seaweed, none! Beautiful reefs on one side of Playa del Carmen, quiet beaches, few tourists. Just a few thatched-roof huts for tourists, and a cheap cinder-block hotel built by locals few blocks from the beach. Mexico should have learned from experience in its other resort areas farther north what happens when you build a lot of hotels and trash the ocean. But no; the country was desperate for economic development. It's killing the goose that laid the golden egg.
