I'm flying from Tijuana to Leon on VivaAerobus & it will be my first time on that airline. I usually fly on Interjet and Volaris.
What's your experience on this airline?
Also, can I take any power tools on checked luggage? I want to take a corded hammer drill. Its 5.15 lbs. I removed the handle bar to reduce some weight. What about a short extension cord?
I got the Viva Basic package which is 10kgs (22.0462lbs) on carry on luggage and 15kgs (33.0693lbs) on checked luggage.
No experience, but I have had it described to me. As it is an airline owned by a bus company, you can't expect much.
Seating has an extra row compared to Volaris.
Viva
Airbus A320-200 180 seats
Airbus A320neo 186 seats
Volaris
Airbus A320-200 174 seats
Airbus A320neo 186 seats
Interjet
Airbus A320-200 150 seats
Airbus A320neo 150 seats
Spirit Airlines
Airbus A320-200 178-182 seats
Airbus A320neo 182 seats
I'm told that Interjet has the best single class service in the Americas.
Arrive early, they are known for overbooking (I got re-scheduled once). I believe the penalty for overweight is around 300 pesos (~15 dlls). I didn't see anything that would restrict a corded drill, they don't allow lithium batteries.
I just travel with them some weeks ago. The fly was from Monterrey to Merida. 2 hours. Pleasant fly, I choose to travel in the emergency exit row for more leg space. The plane was a brand new Airbus 320 Neo, the boarding was fast and by zones, I paid the vip ticket so I went first.
I guess in your checked luggage you will not have problems with your tools.
I've flown with them from CDMX to Puerto Escondido and back. My experience on the CDMX --> PE was that you really need to arrive early or else just bring carry on and print your own boarding pass. The line ups to get boarding passes and check luggage were insanely long at 4am for a 7am flight. Took almost two hours to get through. Compared to that, the security check was nothing.
Returning from PE, it was a breeze. Much faster due to the fact that the PE airport is very low volume. Other than that, it was all good. In both airports the speaker quality was bad and they spoke very fast Spanish when calling for boarding, so you really have to listen carefully or find someone who can translate for you if you don't have excellent Spanish and great hearing.
I upgraded with VivaAeroBus once and when I got to the counter, they hand wrote VIP on my ticket lol and that's how I skipped to the front of the boarding line. Had I known that I could have written VIP
