Air Force Gen. Gene Renuart, who oversees U.S. military interests on both sides of the U.S.-Mexican border as the head of Northern Command, told the Senate that the plan would likely involve all agencies of government including law enforcement and the military.

He said the U.S. military is providing Mexico with assistance including tactics for raiding cartel operations and seizing weapons.

The military is also tracking cartel movements along the border with cameras, listening posts and aerial surveillance vehicles, including unmanned drones, and passing their findings on to U.S. law enforcement, he said.

Asked about suggestions that U.S. troops be positioned on the border for added security, Renuart said it was unclear whether any need for additional manpower should be met by the National Guard or law enforcement agencies.

The U.S. military is also providing law enforcement including customs and border security officials with technology used in Afghanistan to detect tunnels dug under the border.

Note: This is an issue that worries citizens of both countries, so it is positive to discuss it, but...

1 Keep the level of debate high, use arguments, logic and reason and do it politely please
2 Respect others point of view
3 Bashing, name calling, racial slurs, and other kinds of inmature behavior that degrade the level of debate won't be tolerated and will result in the closure of the thread.

That said:

I think it's about time, this problem can only be solved with international cooperation, drug dealers have already made international networks and have operations in every country of the world, so far they are more organized and integrated on their efforts that governments, this needs to change.

For those of you who don't know the U.S. Northern Command (NORTHCOM) stood up Oct. 1, 2002, at Peterson Air Force Base, Colo. The NORTHCOM commander is responsible for homeland defense and also serve as head of the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD), a U.S.-Canada command. The current NORAD commander also is the commander of U.S. Space Command, also at Peterson. NORTHCOM's area of operations includes the United States, Canada, Mexico, parts of the Caribbean and the contiguous waters in the Atlantic and Pacific oceans. The commander is responsible for land, aerospace and sea defenses of the United States. He will command U.S. forces that operate within the United States in support of civil authorities. The command will provide civil support not only in response to attacks, but for natural disasters. NORTHCOM takes the homeland defense role from the U.S. Joint Forces Command (JFCOM). JFCOM's Joint Task Force-Civil Support and related activities report to NORTHCOM. The NORTHCOM headquarters has established liaisons with the homeland security directors of each state, and has working ties with related federal and state agencies.

Amen, and it's about time! I absolutely agree that it's time our countries and citizens worked together rathen than pointing fingers of blame at each other. For those who are unaware of what has been going on, forms of covert cooperation have been in place for many years, although it has never been to this extent.

From the OP's cited article:
"U.S. officials acknowledge that much of the violence is fueled by a stream of U.S. small arms moving into Mexico, while lamenting a rise in gang problems in the United States."

Like I've been saying, we all have a part in this, whether it be by sitting idly by, or thinking what is a global infestation (drug violence) will never hit home on a mass scale.

I applaud the cooperation between our governments.

In this morning's Washington Post; excellent article detailing steps to be taken by top Obama cabinet heads to work with Mexico to halt drugs and guns from flowing across the border. This prior to Obama and Secretary of State Clinton's trip (among other top officials) to Mexico

Part of article....
"To combat the southbound flow of guns, ammunition and grenades at border checkpoints, the government may deploy new equipment, such as scales to weigh vehicles and automated license-plate readers linked to databases, as well as other surveillance technology, she (Homeland Security's Napolitano) said."

"Government officials are discussing how to increase intelligence sharing and military cooperation with Mexico, following a visit there this month by Adm. Michael Mullen, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. And the administration could employ tools used to track terrorist financing to follow the flow of funds within the estimated $65 billion North American drug trade. Funds -- estimated at $18 billion to $39 billion a year -- move through wire transfers as well as cash smuggled into Mexico in planes and vehicles and by human "mules."

Finally a co-operative and aggressive step to address border drug problems.

Hopefully we'll be seeing most of this, like I've said before, if the two governments of both countries worked together, no one could stop us!
