hi,
We are flying in to Miami next week and looking for a quiet but nice hotel within a 30-45 minute drive. We'd like to be on a nice less crowded beach and go out at night for some great local and upscale food, drive or walk. The South Beach club scene isn't really our style. I've looked up Bal Harbour, Hollywood, Surfside, Key Biscayne, and North Beach, but don't know anything about these areas. Would love to find a great hotel in the $200 price range. Help!

Head to Hollywood Beach. Nice this time of the year with plenty of winter birds (Canadians). No half naked women or buff guys showing off their thongs.

You may want to check out some of the hotels in Downtown/Brickell. You may be able to find some good deals there. I stayed at the Viceroy for cheap and enjoyed it. Viceroy, Epic, JW Marriott, Tempo Miami. These are all really nice newly built hotels with good restaurants. You can drive to South Beach in 10 minutes from these hotels. If you're looking for some upscale food in South Beach, I highly recommend Prime 112....expensive, but one of the best restaurants on the beach. I love it.

x2 Check out Ft-Lauderdale beach. It's pretty quiet during the day and Las Olas Blvd. is a few minutes away. Lots of shops and restaurants there.

OP - Key Biscayne has one of the prettiest beaches in Miami, but not a lot of restaurants. There are some, the ritz is the only hotel on Key Biscayne. Have you thought about the Eden Roc or Fontainebleau Miami Beach location. Both are in quieter parts of Miami Beach yet close enough to South Beach if you want a great restaurant you could hop down there. Bal Harbour and Surfside are great areas, pretty quiet, there are a few hotels in the area that span different price ranges. I don't think you need to go all the way to Ft. Lauderdale.
