no i'm advocating protectionism. small local businesses, bartering, etc. relying on ourselves instead of imports/exports.
globalism is a double edged sword that cuts both ways.
talk to mexicans about how all their manufacturing jobs went to china.
we became a consumerist nation and threw all our skills away. when we had to rely on ourselves instead of using our overpriced currency to buy stuff from overseas we had a whole infrastructure of people who had the skills to make anything and getting things customized was easy.
combine a rebirth of trades and skills if we had to rely on ourselves with modern manufacturing techniques and we would be reborn as an economic powerhouse. we have tons of smart people here who have no desire to move overseas and adopt another culture who will stay regardless of the economic climate.

Do you think this is where we are headed in the next 5 to 10 years? I think chances are the scenario I described, probably to a lesser extent, would happen before reaching this economic devolution scenario.

Are you one of those survivalist?

Mike

i wouldnt call it devolution because more people benefit than just the wealthy corporations. a populace skilled in trades and various skills making things is a populace that will invent the machines and tools of tomorrow. not one fat and happy sitting on their laurels mindlessly consuming.

Sao Paulo – Santa Efigênia « Techtravels

Beijing – Phone market « Techtravels

scrimping and saving and learning skills you can use is the path to a better country not the decadence and laziness we are presently consumed by.
