Hello,

I live in the Chicago area and want to buy something from someone in Delray Beach. It is a piece of rehabilitation equipment that will be very pricey to ship (200lbs), so I was thinking of trying to "piggy back" on a moving truck that might be heading up to Chicago in the future. I have done this when I had something to move cross country (Boston to Chicago) in the past, and it worked great.

Has anyone worked with a local mover that services Delray Beach to do something like this in the past? Or perhaps a better question... anyone moved cross country recently from somewhere in the midwest and had really good experience with their mover? Who did you use?

Thanks for your help.

You could try UShip.com. Movers bid on products to move there.

Thanks so much! This is an interesting website.

I just tried entering my specs though, and it is estimating shipping to be $1000 (unlikely I will get someone to bid this) to $2000. It is too pricey.

I have never bought anything this big or expensive on Craigslist before. 200lbs, costs $2000. Maybe it just isn't practical unless it is nearby and you can pick it up yourself.

Has anyone bought something big from ebay or Craiglist and moved it cross-country in a more cost effective way?

Thanks.

Yes - but not using Uship. Every time I looked at shipping something via uShip it was many times more expensive that going to a regular shipper. If timing isn't crucial and you can get to a mutually convenient area (e.g. if they have a shipping yard close by) then it will be cheaper. door to door is always pricey. If I thought people actually paid those prices to move things I would plan to move something every time I went on a cross country drive for vacation. It would pay the fuel and lodging for my entire trip.

Have you even tried calling UPS - I don't know the physical dimensions - so I don't know if it is even possible.

Best bet is to do what you did in the past and continue to keep trying to piggy back it. Too bad this isn't last year at this time, I drove from Miami to Alaska in a pickup truck and Chicago isn't that far of a detour... Not planning a long distance drive this year though.

Thanks for your post Dakster. I did try calling UPS yesterday, but got discouraged regarding the packing problem (they told me they don't pack and I would need to get a crate myself so it would travel safely) and their zillion classes of price points.

It probably is crazy to ship something like this (rehabilitation equipment with a footprint of 2 feet wide x 5 feet long, with parts up to 4 feet tall), and a very risky purchase to do blindly anyway.

And in case you change your mind re: your travel plans, September is a beautiful time of year in Chicago....
