I remember taking a deviance class in college. Crime in Calgary was through roof and they couldnt figure out why. They had just put 25 new cruisers and 40 new cops on patrol over the last year in order to reduce crime. Turns out the addition of these resources resulted in more crimes and criminals being caught.

Crime wasnt up, catching criminals was.

The people compiling the statistics were using a bad system then. They should have been comparing reported crimes Vs. reported crimes and not # of people caught. Presumably people would be equally likely to report a crime regardless of the number of police doing patrols.

But patroling cops will find more crime that would never had been reported or caught without the increase of cops in the streets.
