"Notably, the bridge was brand new - and had not opened yet.

The collapse happened less than a week after crews dropped the elevated span in place over the Tamiami Trail in an effort to provide students a safe route across the busy roadway."

Really stinks.

Not sure what you mean by that. As someone who worked as a sub on public projects in South Florida during the 1990s I have to say, gee, no one could have seen something like this coming.

We'd sometimes get calls to repair the shoddy work of subs who underbid us. Always turned those requests down.

When you're talking construction, especially public works, lives are at stake.

Question I am not an engineer.

The finished bridge (rendering) shows cables holding up the bridge. During the construction phase, how is the bridge supported? (No cables were in place at the time of collapse)

The information coming out is that they were conducting some type of stress test on the bridge. Why they were performing those tests without shutting down 8th street is beyond me, however a lot of people will have to answer for this major catastrophe.

Great photo, olds. Thanks for posting. That almost looks like a mini-Sunshine Skyway (St. Pete) bridge.

Wow, that's a MAJOR screw-up. Seriously? Sigh. No one in Miami ever seems to answer for anything, because there always seems to be all sorts of fingers pointing in different directions.

Yes it is.

I hope a there is a state or federal prosecutor with enough integrity to prosecute the irresponsible people and, if found guilty, a judge to sentence them to prison, not to mention civil suits.

Couldn't agree more. Heck, they used to shut down streets just to film scenes for Miami Vice, for God's sake.
