***************

So many restaurants come and go in South Florida that diners could use a scorecard to figure out what’s open from week to week.

High rents. Changing tastes. Chef boredom.

It all adds up to short restaurant life spans.

But if you look hard enough in the 305 and 954, several restaurants have stood for more than half century. And in always changing Miami-Dade, Broward and the Keys, that is a lifetime.

Here is a look through the Miami Herald archives at at some of the restaurants that have put down roots in South Florida.

In 1971 this One came to Life... A lot younger than what you posted here, but nevertheless and Anchor in S Fl, and Little Havana.

Versailles Restaurant, The World’s Most Famous Cuban Restaurant, has been serving tasty Cuban cuisine and culture to the South Florida community and tourists from around the world for four decades. Soon after it opened its doors in 1971, Versailles quickly became the gathering place and unofficial town square for Miami’s Cuban exiles. Today, it remains the unrelenting gauge of the community’s pulse. Not surprisingly, Versailles is typically the first place politicians visit locally to garner support from the Cuban exile community, and the restaurant is equally a favorite among the media for gathering commentary and footage of the community’s take on social and political issues. It is not uncommon to see local, national and international media set up camp in Versailles’ parking lot, where they’re sure to get a flood of local viewpoints. ***

Cool...I think Joe’s is the second highest grossing restaurant in the entire country.

Curious, how old is The Forge? (Currently closed for renovations until the fall)

The article was about restaurants that have been around for over 50 years. Neither Captain's Tavern (48 yrs.) nor Duffy's (33 yrs.) meets that criterion. As for S&S, it may have been excluded because the Herald hasn't published an article previously on the restaurant and this list was simply a compilation of earlier articles. Either that or perhaps the fact that it has relocated since its inception.

The Forge is almost 100 years old having been opened in the 1920s. As you noted, it's currently closed for renovations, which is probably why it was omitted.

I dont have a problem with the list being older than Carter, as I mentioned earlier in my post about the Versalles !!!

But there are definetely SOME MAJOR winners here under half a century old !!!
