the availability of large volumes of cheep drugs it most likely the reason for Miami reputation for violent crime, pop culture and television dramas are another likely culprit,

tourists are fantastic victims for dozens or reasons and their assaults are always big news, Miami is just a lighten rod for all of these reasons.

99% of murders are arguments over sex or money, I bet if drugs were decriminalized Miami homicide detectives would have to get second jobs.

the weather is another major factor, if Detroit or Memphis had the weather miami has I bet the numbers would be really interesting, any cop will tell you when its hot and clear at night crime gos WAY up!

They've been adding new cities to the First 48 repertoire too. I've been seeing more episodes with Minneapolis, Detroit, Kansas City, Phoenix, Tucson, Birmingham, Cincinnatti, rather than the same old Miami, Dallas, and Memphis. Great show, good initial post.
Incidentally, My favorite episodes are with the Miami, Memphis, Detroit, Dallas and Birmingham crews. Early in the series, they filmed a couple of shows in Philly, but apparently no longer film there.

From what I gather, they have also suspended filming the series in Memphis for some reason. There is a brand new episode coming on soon, but have no idea what city is involved.

I have the DVD "Most Intense Investigations" and it is great. there is also a bonus segment with Schillaci working in vice.

Lol - that is pretty funny! I haven't been to the seedy parts of Miami but I have in baltimoran I can tell you that Baltimore is about as scary as 3rd ave in the Bronx in te 70's - a very scary place! I believe new Orleans is probably the worst out of all the places mentioned.

there was an interesting statistic in the Miami Herald regarding the murders in 2008 for the city of Miami proper. Close to 60% of all murders were black males under the age of 35 and most were drug related. The nex category of murders fell to domestic killings and the last smallest percentage was to random robberies.

what would miami be like if drugs were decriminalized?

I bet the job market would be immediately flooded by drug dealers destroying the economy of south florida driving thousands of hardworking honest illegals back over the border...[lol]

Actually all you have to do is go to LA to find out. They have as many pot stores as McDonalds.

The First 48 focuses on inner-city Miami...which has as just as much crime as any inner-city area. The Miami Beach episode was also focusing on a not-so-good part of MB.

I love that show, btw...
