We are two women coming to Marquette this winter to attend NMU. Will most likely be living on campus, hopefully Spooner Hall or an on campus apt - just looking here for anyone with experience in moving to Marquette sight unseen for the first time or moving into the places I mentioned at NMU - maybe a list of "Things i wish I'd known before..." either of those events, lol. Thanks to any who can help out! Btw, we are coming from PORT HURON, MI...

I don't think it would be much different than moving into any other college dorm with the exception of getting your stuff moved in before the snow!

If you ladies like the outdoors you should have a good time in Mqt. Get out and enjoy what the city has to offer besides just the campus life. That would be my advice. FYI good snowboarding at Marquette Mountain too. Good luck and enjoy yourselves.

Sight unseen? That's taking a leap of faith, especially moving to MQT in winter

As said, if you like the outdoors, take up a winter sport or two. Skiing (downhill or cross country/skate), snowboarding, snowshoeing, etc... If you've never done any, I'm sure NMU has clubs or you can find people to go, and I know local shops like Down Wind Sports will usually offer free lessons once a week.

If you aren't in to the sports thing as much, well, it's college, so simply put, get involved! NMU has a lot of clubs to get involved with and I'm sure all the residence halls try to do group things from time to time.

In any case, getting involved sure helps the winter months pass by when you got something to look forward to other than class and studying.

If you're ready for an adventure, you'll do just fine! January is when the winter sports just get started. Find something you want to try (snowshoeing, x-country skiing, snowboarding, snowmobiling, etc....) and get outside. Make plans now to watch or volunteer at the UP 200 Sled Dog race in February. Really. It's that cool. Outhouse races (also in February) in Trenary are optional.

Coming from Port Huron, you're moving pretty far north AND west. Be prepared to dress in layers and invest in good-quality, light-weight boots. Comfort trumps fashion during the winter in the U.P. Remember that we DO have Target, Wal-Mart, Kohl's, Penney's, Younker's, Gander Mountain and a local favorite -- Getz's so if you need to buy gear, you'll be able to.

There are TONS of things to do indoors, too. Check out the NMU master calendar at Calendars*| Northern Michigan University for ideas. If you're bored with what's going on, start a student organization of your own.

You should also know that students starting at NMU in the winter have a harder time getting a good class schedule and that a lot of the new-student stuff isn't replicated for the winter. Work with your adviser or ACAC until you DO get the schedule you need. Just be a squeaky wheel. You can continue to add courses after the first day of classes, you'll just need to talk to the instructors for add cards. Not a big deal, but they might not tell you that at winter orientation.

Get to know your RA and house mates. They'll show you all the fun stuff to do when you're not in class. A place to start previewing is at Living in Marquette*| NMU Admissions.

Most of us are thrilled to live in where *other* people go on vacation. We'll be glad to have you here, too!
