So, my husband's family and friends (we actually talked about it at a bbq with many family and friends) call a receipt a bill.

You purchase something, and they hand you a bill. Well, it isn't a bill, it is a receipt because you paid for it and there is nothing to pay for. Kinda silly.

My mother in law is here, and she keeps calling paper towels paper toweling! It is driving me mad. What the heck is paper toweling????

Nothing drives me as nuts as directionals. What the hell is a directional? Turn indicator, a bit wordy, but okay. We call them turn signals. Directionals? What?

1. What do you call the piece of paper they give you in a restaurant at the end of a meal?

2. If you pay for your meal with a credit card, what do you call the piece of paper they give you after they take away the first piece of paper with your credit card?

3. If you pay for your groceries with a credit card, what is the piece of paper that you receive called before you sign it?

Just want to get this all straightened out before I offend my in-laws.

Slip of paper given at the end of a meal and before you pay = Bill (Shortened version of "bill of sale")

slip of paper you get after having paid the bill (regardless of payment method) = Receipt

Really don't know what else you could call them.

Oh yeah - turn signals or blinkers depending on what come out first. It's about 50-50

I was about to say this. "Bill" is short for "bill of sale."

Also, I either say "turn signal" or "blinker." Never heard anyone say "directional."
