LANSING, Mich. (AP) — Gov. Rick Snyder on Tuesday signed into law a stricter, four-year lifetime limit on cash welfare benefits, prompting advocates for the poor to warn that tens of thousands of residents will find themselves without cash assistance on Oct. 1.

Michigan's first-year Republican chief executive said the state will offer exemptions to the limit for those with a disability who can't work, those who care for a disabled spouse or child and those who are 65 or older and don't qualify for Social Security benefits or receive very low benefits.

Ridiculous, especially in this economy. Just another way Snyder is killing Michigan.

Republican motto: rob from the poor to give to the rich.

Um.... no. Taking away welfare benefits after four years is not robbery. Taking tax money from working folks by force and then giving that money to the unemployed? That might be a form of robbery. How about we help the less fortunate on our own terms and the government sticks to things it is supposed to be doing. Like national defense and infrastructure and stuff.

Agreed.

Yet at the same time Tricky Dick gave the rich a $1.7 Billion Dollar handout.

Yeah, Texas sure is doing great with this model....

*27.7% of Texas are uninsured and they have the worst handle on health care of any state (meanwhile "socialist" Massachusetts has the best handle on it).
*Texas has one of the worst budget deficit in the country.
*The average ACT score in Texas is 20.8, ranked 42nd in the nation.
*Texas has the highest insurance rate in the nation.
*Texas is #1 in pollution
*Texas is #1 in teen pregnancy
*Texas' average SAT score ranked 47th.
*Texas has the highest number of people without a high school diploma.
*Texas ranked 2nd in wealth inequality.
*Texas ranks 5th for Cervical Cancer.

FOR STARTERS.

And just in 2006, Michigan had the 4th highest wages in the country. Now it's somewhere near the bottom.

It's actually pretty sick. I wonder what made people in this state become so self-centered and selfish. It wasn't always like this. Was it the Reagan brainwahsing, as this was the state known for "Reagan Democrats." In recessions you're supposed to run deficits and in good times you're supposed to cut spending to save for rainy days such as recessions. That's common sense. If Tricky Dick had some sound plan to generate good paying jobs for the people being kicked to the curb then I may be all for it.

Uh, yeah... that huge drop happened mostly between 2007-2009, and it has almost nothing to do with conservative vs liberal politics and especially has nothing to do with Rick Snyder, who took office after the shakeout was complete.

Also, comparing Texas to a state like Mass. is kinda stupid too. I would like to see what would happen to Texas if they tried to provide health care for everyone, including illegal immigrants. There is no way they could afford to do it. You can't compare Texas to Massachusetts or even Michigan. They have a completely different history, culture, and set of challenges than almost any other state. Massachusetts has been a wealthy and privileged state since the U.S. was founded. Thankfully for them, there is so much old money in that state that they can have screwed up politics and still survive on the wealth that has been there for generations. There is no possible way to make Massachusetts as poor and uneducated as Texas, I don't care WHAT politics are in place there. Do you think that if Massachusetts suddenly turned conservative that it would suddenly have crappy education and lots of poor people? Sorry buddy. That ain't happening. Your theory needs work.
