the whole thing is confusing the hell outta me. Does this 4 year limit cap only apply to cash assistance, or does it also apply to food stamps as well?

i ask because my family is not on cash assistance;however, my baby mama has been on food stamps for three years and we are really confused. does this mean next year we will not have any food stamp benefits?

and NO, we do not milk the govt, my g/f is trying to find a job working from home because we cannot afford daycare. we dont want to be on aid the rest of our lives.

While Food Stamps won't be directly impacted, they're going to base your eligibility on assets now.

So hopefully you don't have more than $5,000 in assets.

And yes, it's sad that people like you are being punished for being caught in a bad situation beyond your control. It's sick people in this state can lambast the poor and unemployed while cutting assistance for them and the unemployment rate is stuck well above 10%.

What's the pragmatic aproach to create jobs for all of these people impacted? And for Detroiters, what's the pragmatic approach to provide them with reliable transportation to these minimum wage/part-time McJobs in the exburbs (if you've been up to date on the news lately, DDOT is not reliable transportation, and you can't blame 700,000 people for this when they've been left behind to handle infrastructure for 2 million people)? This would actually require some critical thinking beyond "We're broke, get them lazy bums off of my taxpayers!!! Give more tax cuts to businesses who probably wouldn't hire anyone anyway!!!" We've tried tax cuts for 30 years and it has failed, what's the new plan?

Others are actually suggesting getting rid of important labor laws because we're losing jobs to sweat shops in Mexico/Central America and Asia. Ummm, no. You don't just roll back everything the American people have fought for over the last centruy because of a temporarily bad situation.

As well they should.

This is wrong. You are trying to make it sound like ALL assets are included... that is simply wrong and fear mongering. SOME assets are used. $5000 in bank accounts, CD's, etc.... Second homes, vacation properties, etc... are also now being looked at. That is more than fair.

The 4 year rule was already in place for adults (enacted by the previous democrat governor), now children are included.

If your 10 years old now and your family is on assistance for 4 years, and 35 years from now, you find your self needing assistance again, you won't get any. Yup, that's fair.

The assets part (for food stamps), was knee jerk reaction to a few people having lottery winnings or court settlements that gave large payouts and continued to get food stamps. But rather then just addressing the few, or setting up rules to look at each on a case by case basis, they cast a wide net, that is going to snare many who were not their targeted audience.

The 30 years you talk about shows tax revenues grew at a greater rate than inflation. It's still a spending problem, not revenue. I'd say the failure has been in 45 years of welfare that only begat more welfare and dependency.

Ex Michigander here now living in Texas with a serious question. Why is it that thousands of Mexicans can travel from their hometowns in Mexico to work in Texas building houses as carpenters, drywallers, roofers, concrete &, masonary workers, painters, landscaping, or work as housecleaners , hotel workers, restaurants workers; but native Americans won't travel from Detroit or elsewhere to do the same? Or do they? I can't believe for a second that they are all American citizens of Mexican descent. Rather they must be either illegal and here on bogus paper work or they are here under some kind of temporary work visa, Either way we let them in to work these jobs that apparently no one else wants? Many travel back to Mexico taking money saved with them. Many are very entrepreneurial and start their own businesses. I'm wondering if we should scorn these people as likely illegals taking some American's job or should we laud them as the next great class of hard working American's who are doing the work apparently no one else wants. Why don't we see caravan's of local Detroiters banding together to travel down to the sunbelt states to do the same? I will tell you from my observation in my neighborhood where houses are still being built in large numbers that these Mexican laborers are tight knit and work hard from sun up till sun down. They have a tremendous work ethic. Regardless their status I admire their work ethic, I don't see anyone besides Mexican's working on those hot roofs on 100 degree days. I don't know where they go at night but I never hear of any trouble. Why does this all seem so backwards to me? Are people really willing to do anything for work or do they really just expect a handout?

Anytime the gov't gives anything away, there is massive fraud.

To get a general sense of the culture of much of Detroit, try to watch a whole episode of Hardcore Pawn and then let's talk about work ethic. I dont mean to be sarcastic or hard-hearted but I think generations of folks have grown accustomed to getting a check for breathing and it's just not there to hand out anymore.
