Congrats to the beautiful 200K+ citizens of Michigan who value their democratic rights as citizens.

Petitions To Repeal Michigan Emergency Manager Law, Public Act 4, Recommended For Certification

It bodes well for getting enough signatures for the 2nd Governor recall effort also.

BTW, this repeal has absolutely no impact on Detroit's consent agreement.

Why would you want to repeal it? If a local community ran things so poorly to bankrupt itself, wouldn't you want the state to come in and correct things?

That law has been in effect for decades. They just refined it a bit more this last time around. I doubt either it gets repealed OR Snyder gets recalled.

Michigan is doing great...why would you want to recall Snyder? And where is the proof this is a bad law?

I do not think they are trying to repeal the entire law, just the recent expansion of EFM powers. I am not sure what they hope to accomplish. It appears to be a union move to protect their contrcts and barganing/bribing powers.

The alternative to EFM is bankruptcy. In that case, a federal judge appoints a trustee to run the entity. I have not seen a direct comparison of powers, but I am pretty sure a bankruptcy trustee has greater powers than an EFM.

In many of the current situations all an EFM can do is ease the entity inot bankruptcy instead of just dumping them into bankruptcy. THe EFM cannot print money like the Federal Government can. Most of the agencies that need an EFM are in an unsalvagale position. A few can be re-directed and avoid BK. If Detroit does not get an EFM, they will declare bankruptcy by the end of the year. With an EFM, they will probably BK within 2 years. Maybe they should just get it over with and BK now.

It amazes me that people support having their elected local officials run the city to the ground when they could benefit by having a "shared wealth" in a greater entity.

(Although if the local officials are capable of doing a good job, that is preferable to accepting a potentially lower standard from a larger authority.)

It is all for naught (http://www.myfoxdetroit.com/dpp/news/local/michigan-elections-board-won't-put-emergency-manager-law-on-ballot-20120426-spb - broken link).

Monumental waste of money and energy. They will undoubtedly file a lawsuit.

After spending $50,000 or more, if they win, and if they win in time for it to get on the ballot, it will probably get shot down. This issue will be viewed as an issue about Detroit. That is how the issue has been primarily presented in the media. I think you will find that the general populace of Michigan believes that Detroit needs an EFM and the City government is incapable of governing the city, especially in its current financial condition. They were given a chance to come up with a solution to the financial crises and were unable to agree on anything. Few people are going to support returning power to a council that proved incapable of dealing with the problems becasue they cannot agree on anything. Regardless of whether this will impact Detroit at all, or whether it is really about more general principals, it will be percieved as being about Detroit. Basically people will see: Do you think the State should be allowed to take over Detroit and try to manage its economic affairs.

Not only yes, but h3ll yes. I do not see how this can possibly win. Pressuring random people going into a grocery store to sign something is very different than winning an election.

Then it should be on the ballot and let the people have a say. Quick and easy straight vote for or against. A petition should be good enough to get a vote.
