It takes about 20 minutes to get to Battle Creek from K-zoo. The next major town is Marshall, which is about another 20-25 minutes from Battle Creek.

I tend to agree with Coldjensens who said, "a short commute makes a better life."

Sometimes the problem w/commuting on 94 isn't driving on 94, but getting to 94.

Personally, I'd live in the K-zoo area, if that's where my job was. I'd live in Marshall if that's where my job was. There are just intangible benefits that come from having a job close to where you live.
Do what? 20-25 mins from Marshall to Battle Creek? I think not. Usually takes me 15-20 mins tops and i live downtown Battle Creek.

Agree about Marshall being the better place to live.

Also keep in mind that even though i-94 gets cleared first you still tend to get a number of whiteouts in winter thanks to the lake effect snow and usually that starts from near Battle Creek on west into Kalamazoo especially. When that happens forget about it. That highway becomes a nightmare. I myself would not make the trip and thus why there is no way i would work in Kalamazoo and live in Marshall/Battle Creek or vice verse.

Good luck on the move.

Hum, well, I guess I will try to live and work in the same city.

You mentioned battle Creek. Is this a city similar to Marshall/Kzoo in terms of safety/frindly/school district?

thanks again for your time

As with anything it depends on where and or what part of Battle Creek? The south side ( includes Harper Creek and Lakeview school districts ) and Pennfield ( ne BC ) area are pretty good aka decent schools and generally safe. A ton of revitalization going on downtown ( which is looking very nice ) and is pretty safe. The main advantages here is you have the Casino, Full Blast, and the Binder Park Zoo. Also have a decent lake ( Goguac Lake..Nice neighborhood surrounding it and golf course )which has a public beach aka Williard Beach.

You might want to consider living in Battle Creek in order to cut down the commute to Marshall, and its also close enough to Kalamazoo to go there when you want too.

I don't know much about Battle Creek, but it seems nice from the few times I've been there.

Your looking at about a 30-40 min. commute from Kalamazoo (once you get on I-94) to Marshall on a good day. There's A lot of trucks on I-94 and the Battle Creek to Kalamazoo section of the highway is probably the busiest section outside of metro Detroit.

I'd be curious what your friends in K'zoo are telling you about living there and commuting to Marshall every day. As has been mentioned earlier, K'zoo is in the snow belt area and gets pounded during the winter with lake effect snow. There's different considerations for you to look at and a realtor can help you. You may PM me for a suggestion if you'd like. I grew up in the Calhoun County area, worked in Kalamazoo for a few years in the 70's. I retired out of the Battle Creek/Marshall area 5 years ago and can tell you about I-94/M-66/I-69.

Lived in Kalamazoo for 7 years and loved it. Portage is a nice suburb and has good schools. I lived off of Westnedge on pleasant avenue and it was such a great spot to live, very safe. I loved it because Meijer, gas stations, restaurants, lowes and highway access were practically in my back yard but we still felt like we were not living in the city because the neighborhood was pretty. It was also in kps school district so u could get the promise. I interned at woods lake elementary and it
Was a really good school. I would send my own kid there. 94 is not that bad. In the winter you would just have to account for extra drive time in snow. You can also use emergency 94
If there are backups.

My wife prefers to live in Kalamazoo. Marshall seemed a really small city. I will probably take the job in K-zoo I guess
