How times change from five years ago:

Ottawa Co. companies face challenges finding new workers

HOLLAND TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WZZM) -- Ottawa County's lowest unemployment rate in a decade is leading to new challenges for local employers. According to a new report by the economic development organization Lakeshore Advantage, many companies are having trouble filling open positions.

Maybe people in Jackson, Flint, and Saginaw can relocate to Ottawa county.

Here's a hint to Ottawa County employers:

RAISE WAGES. Don't just hide behind the "we pay competitive wages" line. Shell out! Only then will you find workers that fit the bill.

Ottawa County does have some of the lowest wages in the State, so definitely an adjustment upward would make sense.

Ottawa County's per capita income is among the highest in Michigan tho, what am I missing?

Ottawa County has an impressive auto supplier base. It's both Factory and salaried R&D. The economy has been strong for so long that they are hiring across all sectors.

I think Ottawa County is maybe 20% manufacturing, so probably a lot of the unfilled jobs are in that field, floor workers, engineering, quality control, management, etc..
