Hello everyone.
Im looking for information about nice, rural area close to Lake Michigan , also smaller lakes , ATV trails in Michigan. Every yaer we spend several weekends in Wi ( Friendship, Adams) and Michigan ( South Haven, ) and finally we've decided to look for a lot to build vacation cottage. We are looking for safe area for the kids, with outdoor activities , lakes, woods. I rode on my motorcycle few times around lake Michigan and I love your state. Winters don't bother us as we ski very often and like cold and snow. We live on the north side of Chicago and looking for something not too far , 2-2 1/2 hours from our home. Can you, please suggest areas we should consider? Thanks in advance.

Half of Chicago is buying or has bought Vacation homes near lake Michigan. Chicago provides the entire economy for much of the area. They are building places like mad all over the area for people exactly like you.

The people we know who live in the area see it as a mixed blessing. The "City people" bring their rushed attitude, disrespect for nature (litter), rudeness, crowding, and bad taste in architecture; but they also bring money, liveliness, and money. Without the trend of Chicago people buying up vacation homes and swarming the Lake Michigan area many areas would still be dead and empty. However eventually too many people will come, and they will ruin the things that make the area desireable.

Do you have a budget? South Haven and Grand Haven are wonderful, but getting pricey. The new subdivisins popping up all over the woods for Chicagoans are heavily marketed in Chicago, you should be able to find a local realtor in Chicago to help you with your quest.

South Haven home prices are still reasonable if you don't want a house within walking distance to Lake Michigan.
