I love the old fashioned barber shops where they are actually barbers (which requires special training) and where all the local personalities hang out and chat about local issues. There was one in Nashville. It looks like it is now called Scores Haircuts for men. Not sure whether it is still a classic barber ship. I know of one in Detroit and one Downriver (run by women barbers). I had one in Ann Arbor too, but it is definitely gone or at least moved someplace else. It can be hard to find a real barber now. There is a lot of useless training required. Barbers no longer bleed you if you are sick, but they still have to learn related skills even though they cannot actually use them.

There's Korners Barbers in downtown Farmington, right on Grand River and Farmington Road. I've never had my hair cut there, but I tried to get one during a weekday lunch. Four actual barbers in a 1950's style shop. But it was packed that weekday with a 45 minute wait - I couldn't take that long. Try it on the weekend - it's probably just what you're looking for.

I hear what you're saying about wanting just an old fashioned barber shop. I've been to Lady Jane's once; it's more a hairstylist place than a barber shop - cheap chairs and they don't dry cut hair. The waiting chairs were actually video game chairs in front of game consoles (you get to sit nearly on the ground). I tried a Floyd's Barber Shop, but left after waiting over an hour while listening to the bad 90's music that they blared in the shop. I get my traditional haircuts at Fred's Barber Shop on Woodward in Birmingham - two trained and licensed barbers in an actual but plain barber shop that's been there since the 1960's; the longest I ever waited was 15 minutes. $21 haircuts, not including tip.
