The first day we hung out in Grand Marais, and checked out Sable Falls and Dune. Loved the color of Lake Superior, it's stunning.

Second day we went kayaking, a 6-hour kayaking tour of Pictured Rocks, with lunch on Mosquito Beach (which is also beautiful). After that we checked out Munising, which the town itself I wasn't impressed, but the setting (bay, hills) where beautiful. We also hit Au-Sable lighthouse.

On the third day we did Tahquamenon Falls, both of them. We decided to be adventurous, and went down a dirt road, that after 40 minutes took us to Crisp Point Lighthouse, which was one of my favorite parts of the trip.

On the fourth day we returned early.

I absolutely loved it up there and want to go back. The weather was perfect and the lack of people make it so nice and relaxing.
Great to hear. We are scheduled to go up to Munising in mid-August. We don't "rough-it" and will be staying at Holiday Inn. Yes, the town isn't much but the setting is awesome. We'll probably go to Marquette for a day for some walking around a nice downtown. We are pretty much repeating a trip we did last year (which including Grand Marais) that was so nice, was worth doing again. Crisp Point Lighthouse would be a new adventure for us but sounds like a pretty arduous journey though we have an Outback so it might be doable.

Lake Superior is my favorite lake bar none. As Pure Michigan as it gets. Awe inspiring! Glad you could discover it.

Crisp Point is worth it IMO. Just getting to it is an experience, a fun one. Then you get to that destination and realize how remote and quiet it is, and beautiful.

Great to hear you had a nice time.

Congratulations - you are hooked. You just bit the tip of the hook thought there is so much to see and do plan on your next 20 vacations being to the UP.

Now you know why so many Michiganders pretty much vacation "Up North" and rarely leave the state.

We really enjoyed camping at the Ojibwa reservation campgrounds.

Close to the Ottowa National forest/mountains, Keeweenaw peninsula, Marquette no too far away the "Michigan's grand canyon" was close. It was a good base. Not the cleanest place, but the location right on the water was fabulous.

It is a great base from which to explore a lot of the UP.

Does the northern Lower Peninsula count as "Up North"?

Absolutely! The U.P. is great, but I would rate the northern 1/3 of the lower peninsula pretty close. There are some things in the northern lower that you can’t find in the U.P., and vice versa. I love both.

Yes! From Nashville there are many tours to Mackinac Island, the Big Bridge, then on up to the Soo locks. May be restrictions to cross the border into Canada there.

There is an endless debate in Michigan (and on CD) as to just where "Up North" begins. For me, almost everything is up north, even Detroit.
