Thanks everyone it gives me some things to think about. I would be happy to living on some acreage near civilization too, that could be a happy medium. When your forced to be idle for a bit it makes you think too

I’d say central UP wouldn’t be bad either. People act like it’s on the edge of the world, but it’s usually just that everyone goes to Green Bay, Milwaukee, or Chicago rather than anywhere downstate. However, if you want to be close to Detroit metro than I think places within 60-90 minutes would fit too.

Also, people are amplifying the risks of taking care of land - mainly, because they care I’m sure. There are a ton of people living independently with decent chunks of land and often small communities will help each other out. I’d say the best measure is how accessible you want the “old” life to be and what kind of distance you want to be from amenities.

Another thing to keep in mind is the “pace” of life. It can be surprisingly hard to adapt and slow life down.
