Thinking about applying for a(nother) job in Michigan and was wondering about the emission laws there in the state. I left there in '82 when I joined the USAF and I don't remember any then. I have a diesel truck and was going to do some modifications to the exhaust system (I use it to tow a 5th wheel). There are laws here in NM but not for diesels (yet!) and was just curious as to what I'd have to do if such laws existed in Michigan.

There are no emission laws in Michigan. At least there is nobody checking emissions since they got rid of the yearly test. As a matter of fact, exhausts/mufflers are optional because I see so many old cars and "cool" trucks with a loud or no muffler at all.

I am all for a strict emission and noise law with a yearly check.

I think you actually can get a ticket for removing your catalytic converter, but people mostly get away with it because no one is checking.

There are a ton of people up here with modified diesels. My roommate has one, and it blows black smoke like crazy. You can do pretty much whatever you want to your exhaust here.

There actually is a legal decibel limit (not sure what it is). Either way, it's not enforced very tightly.
