With the first snowfall of the year here in SE Michigan today, I decided it would be fun to see how many people have opinions about the cold Michigan winters with all its snow, how much snowfall people got in different regions, etc.

Share your snowfall, and voice your opinions!

1st snowfall that stuck in this area was December 1st. Got a few inches last night, and throughout the day today. With the wind that is blowing it has put a slick glaze of ice over the roads and they have already canceled school for the kids tomorrow. What do I think of it? I don't mind it really. I like the way a fresh snowfall makes everything bright and sparkling, and the softness of the sound outside during a snowfall, then afterwards. The crisp air, and clean scent is nice as well. It's winter in Michigan, so it is what is expected.

I live in Mason County and the snowfall amounts vary widely... very widely sometimes. Last week we had a snow storm move through and while Ludington only got about 3.5" of snow, just 15 miles due East got almost 14" of snow. The lake effect on weather and snowfall amounts really shows up here every year. Right on the lake and you don't get a whole lot, but the further inland you go, the deeper it gets. Ludington averages 63.7" of snow a season -- Scottville (8 miles due East of Ludington) averages 90.8" a season.

I just got in from shoveling the drive. We got about 4" here in mid-Mi. I love the snow, I love the cold...I love everything about winter. My best friend...all he does is complain about it, I dont understand people like this. You live here...stop complaining, and try to enjoy it. I loved being out there in the cold and blowing snow....I am a winter freak!

I could care less. I purchased a snowmobile so I plan to use for the first time next weekend. This is more of a northern phenomena but so many strangers in Michigan want to start small talk with the weather. Even in the summer they talk about snow.

I'm sure you will not like it.
I talk about snow all the time in the summer...I also talk about summer in winter.

Saginaw news station says Flint got 5", Saginaw just under 6". That sounds reasonable, out in my driveway there is at least that much, but the wind will not stop blowing it around so who knows. I dont think anyone in Michigan got the mega snow they called for, but at least we got some. Any one from further downstate on here?? how much down by Detroit??

Haven't measured it yet, but going by sight, I'm gonna say I got two or three inches in front of my house on Detroit's East Side.

According to my mother and the news, Alpena got a foot. We live Downriver, got about 4".

Anybody planning to go see the Vikings/Giants game at Ford Field tomorrow? I think it was very gracious of the Lion's and William Clay to offer the use of the facilities.

Why is it that lake effect snow happens more inland than right on the shore? This from someone further south who is fascinated by the Great Lakes and your state in particular. I'm in St. Louis and wish we had more snow (river effect?). Oh well.

Oregraphic effect is the reason. Lake effect snow fall increases dramatically as you rise in elevation further inland. THe areas that receive the most snow in Michigan are usually the highest parts of the state. Some areas of Michigan reach over 1000 feet. The area near Gaylord Michigan is a great example of this. They get much more snow than Traverse city which is much closer to the lake. The higher elevation of Gaylord literally pulls the moisture out of the atmosphere.
