As an old former airdale (65-67) , I have often wondered how the progression from 1st Class PO (E-6) to Chief PO (E-7 ) goes......................in rates that get bunched together at E-7
Do ABE1........ABF1.............ABH1.....do cross training between those 3 rates while still an E-6?
If not, how would they be able to master all 3 when they take the test for ABC (E-7) that covers all 3 ?
There are other Naval rates that are different and also combine at the E-7 level (Chief Petty Officer )
I joined in '61, made Chief (E7) in '74, and Senior Chief in '78. The radars and computers for weapons systems were operated and repaired by Fire Control Technicians (FT) and were split, up through E7 into FTG (Guns & Subs), FTM (surface missiles), FTB (balastic missiles - Polaris) and combined at E8 (FTCS). You read that from the back: S= Senior, C= Chief, FT= Fire Control Technician. This is all history now. Many rates have been revised and combined with new names. Reorganization is the illusion of progress.
