Serious question: is he just interested in the benefits without putting in the work?

Seems we've had a few around here lately, even one admitting to be a coward wanting to join to build a resume!

Honestly people shouldn't join any branches of the military with the hopes of not being deployed.

Banking on never being deployed is folly.

Yep. It's people who want all the benefits but none of the sacrifice.

Some people want the attaboys, pats on the back and praise but ask them to leave their friends/family for a year in a combat zone? No way! That's not what they signed up for!!!

That's what I signed up for. I've spent nearly 1/3 of my time in the Army deployed. Does it suck? Yeah it does at time but for those who have never deployed, they will never know the bond you develop with those who you have deployed with. An even closer bond is one that those who have seen combat together develop. To me, it's closer than the bond between husband and wife.

When you know the guy to your left and right will put their life on the line for you and they know you'll do the same, there's no describing it. For those who have never been, they wouldn't understand. Nothing can be compared to it.

Also understand that not all deployments = combat, and that it will also depend on what your MOS/rating/AFSC/whatever is.

My husband has had deployments where he was safer than he is when he's driving down the road to go to a reserve drill weekend.
