As a former Marine, I just ask them a few questions and I'll know in less than a minute if someone was ever a Marine. Have someone that you know is a former Marine interrogate them. They'll be able to find out the truth.

All active duty service members will have a military ID card. It will have an expiration date on it when their contract is up.

Here's the problem with asking for an ID...

I forgot it.
It's in my other pants.
I lost it.
I'm on special assignment and had to turn it in.

Or they show you a CAC, but it's no longer valid because they got kicked out and "lost" it, so it wasn't surrendered prior to being discharged. This at least shows they were in at some point.

Or they say they just got out and no longer have one. At least that's what they claim.

Have a Marine or former Marine interrogate him. If they were never in the Marine Corps they won't be able to BS a Marine or former Marine about it.

You think its easier to go track down another marine then have them meet up???

Last I remember, you are required to carry your ID on you.
I wont even bother making random comments why being interrogated couldn't work either.

Context matters.

Is this somebody seeking benefits/discounts/similar?

Ask to see ID.

Is this somebody you are seeing?

Introduce them to another military member, odds are, they won't be able to "talk shop."

Is this somebody you are involved with online who is purporting to be serving somewhere far away (common scam)? If so, the content of the messages usually gives it away.

I agree. Why do you need to know and Why do you not believe what they say?
