Yes we are Navy and would be at Oahu, either Kaneohe or Pearl Harbor. I don't mean Oahu to settle down I just mean for one more tour.

For those who entered the Armed Forces on or after September 8, 1980 the base pay is the average of the highest 36 months of active duty base pay received. So it makes it harder to calculate.

Rich
We are after 1980, but it seems really close to your calcualtion for the old system. Pretty much retiring at 20 years vs 30 years means about a cool 1000k a month. For enlsited of course!

My husband got out of the Navy this past Aug. after being in for 10 years. The deployments became longer and more frequent. He missed so many of the kids' milestones. In the end the separation was more difficult on my husband than it was for me. I hated being apart, but I got used to it. He will finish out his 20 in the reserves. I sometimes wish we had stayed in. Good luck to those of you who are still in and those who have spouses serving active duty. And congrats to those who have made it to retirement!

Also with the new GI bill for college education, you can transfer the benefits to your child.

At 23 years active shouln't you be receiving about $2100 per month? Not trying to be super nosy but my husband is going to retire at 21 years, and after doing the math we should get around 2k per month. We don't know if we are going to go with the survivor plan, did you guys?

10,000Lakes, roadfamily6now's husband was medically retired at AGE 23, which means they are are eligible for a pension commensurate with his length of service, which is probably 4 years or less.

I did 20 years and my pension is less than that.

No SBP here.

I am grateful- but it's really going to be the end of me. I've already written my will, deeded my property, have a burial plot, etc.
I'm only 39 years old.

I was injured in Desert Storm and left the military in pain, physical pain. The way things were done back then may be different than the way they are now but they tell me I'm classified as retired, but my VA rating is 100% w/ some other benefit code.

All the retirement benefits are mine except medical. I must go thru the VA- which is why I'm dying.
My luck has been the utmost worst ever in dealing with the VA. Years ago all they would do is schedule pelvic exams ...they were so concerned that I had a vagina they overlooked the fact I was a disabled veteran.

I've moved around a bit and going from one VISN to another is like- the worst. Out west my care was top notch. But just as soon as I moved here- they are bringing out the wooden teeth at dental, and wanting more pelvic exams.
They do not recognize me as a disabled vet- only a female veteran.

Sadly, my retirement pay doesn't allow me to get medical care outside the VA. I found a good surgeon but it would cost a years pay to have the procedure done up a few states from where I live. The VA's philiosopy is:
make 'em wait, wait, and wait some more and hopefully they will leave.
If they do stay, give 'em motrin and send 'em home....maybe they won't come back.
If they come back, tell 'em we 'hear' them and are gonna work on it, and of course, send 'em home.
If they come back, yet again, well.....what else can we do to get rid of 'em?

No kidding, I almost lost my life years ago to pneumonia- it was a private doc and hospital that admitted me and treated me...the VA really did send me home saying it was 'post nasal drip'.

And now that my bones are crumbling in my back, out west I was in line to receive care...but here- it's drop your drawers and let me stick you with a needle....yep, doesn't matter where the pain is or the problem....I've been doing this for years- they say. (when this had been done for years with no relief)

I feel the VA system should be disbanded...let the Fed, since they are being so generous these days, let them pay for specialists training at Mayo, and Johns Hopkins- so the really battle wounded will have some place to go....but for the rest of us....we should have healthcare just like retired military...or better yet- we should have health insurance just as good as congressmen or senators...but nope.

We are left to go to socialized healthcare where the docs are just there for paychecks and no real medicine is practiced. (not all VAs are like this...there are really some good ones out there...but where I live- NOT)
