I understand that an Anti-American governor has been elected in a certain city in Okinawa that the US wanted to have its main base moved to. Therefore, is the US going to completely withdraw its bases from Okinawa and relocate to Guam? When and how many will have to leave? Does the US actually have to move if the local Okinawa government says so? Or does Tokyo decide?
What I want to know is what is so important about having a base in Okinawa, other than it being so close to Asia? Isn't Guam good enough or do we need to be closer to Asia to defend our interests?
Secondly, if the base is relocated to Guam, will the US military have enough land already on its bases there? Or will the US military need more land on Guam? How many US military officers will be relocated to Guam if need be?
Third, why would the Okinawa divisions have to be relocated to Guam? What about the Northern Mariana Islands? Wasn't two-thirds of Tinian set aside for a US base?
The NY Times did not provide enough information recently on this topic. Thanks.
