It is available!!!In December, I became the produce lead (the produce manager for a small store) for the Bangor ANGB ME commissary. Since taking that position I learned there is a program "buy local" to make it available to get locally grown produce in the stores. In December I started trying to get Maine potatoes in Maine commissaries, and starting next week, Maine commissaries will have Maine potatoes available. Now we are looking for local farmers who can supply us with local food, in season. For years as a shopper, I was always under the impression that all the produce needed to come from the supplier that had the contract. It's NOT so. The program is there, and the produce manager just needs to work with the supplier to make use of it.So now you know, so if you want local produce in your store, get the produce manager to start making use of the program. And if you know a farmer in Maine who might be interested, let me know.
