I'm bringing about a dozen friends Milwaukee in a few months to celebrate my 40th birthday. Looking for suggestions on an interesting place to eat, and places to get drunk for a mostly 30 something crowd. Safe House is cool, but the one time I was there the food was mediocre at best. Neat atmosphere though. Prefer something American, Mexican, or Italian. We'll likely stay in the 'burbs and take cabs downtown. I suppose if i wasn't lazy I could search this board and find lots of cool ideas

Price wise $20-30 a person for food would be ideal. We all have fairly tight budgets

You'll want to look up places on Milwaukee Street near Cathedral Square. There are a fair amount of restaurants & places to grab a drink, many have music on the weekends. Depending if you're into piano bars, people I know have had fund at Lucille's on 3rd/Highland. There are a good amount of restaurants & places to go out to between Water Street & 3rd Street.

You might also consider the 3rd ward, there are some good places there too... although there isn't the same amount of proximity to walk between each... at least in winter.

Hope you enjoy your 39th birthday.

Somone told me of a Spy themed bar called the safe-house in downtown.

I haven't been there but I'm told it's pretty cool. I'm planning on checking it out my self sooner than later.

From what I'm told if you go before a certain time you can just walk in but after that time you have to stuff to get in like dance a silly dance. Which is also on closed circuit tv for the bar to see lol. Inside are other cool spy stuff. Anyways it sounds like fun. The bar was featured on Travel Channel Extreme Restaurants. Here is a youtube clip

And follow that up with a tour of the MKE Brewery. Make sure you buy tickets on-line ahead of time for both or be prepared to potentially wait a long time. Oh, and please take a taxi or have a designated driver.

Also, I always make sure when I'm visiting Milwaukee to go here for GREAT beer, GREAT service, and GREAT atmosphere: Old German Beer Hall - Hofbräuhaus in Milwaukee

For boozin, I guarantee everyone will love a tiki bar. You have Foundation on the East Side (Riverwest), and Lucky Joes Tiki Room (closer to downtown, 5th Ward @ 2nd/Pittsburgh). Both are awesome. Lucky Joes is bigger and has way more room for larger groups, so I'd choose that one.

If you want to kill two birds with one stone, The Wicked Hop (Downtown/3rd Ward) has good food, but it's a bar too (AMAZING bloody marys...plus they have a 96oz bloody that comes in a glass cowboy boot...2-3 of those would be perfect for a large group).

Already suggested, but Lakefront Brewery tour is killer, and cheap ($7 gets you the tour, 3 drink chips, and a Lakefront pint glass you get to keep).

And not to knock a previous comment, but I'd skip At Random (only have crazy mixers, and more for couples).

Blu was also mentioned, and it's awesome, but it's damn pricey...more of a date/dress up place...would advise against it for your intentions.
