Interesting posts. The thread is about "how dangerous is Milwaukee". Someone posts relevant information, and instead of staying on topic, others attack the poster and their city of residence, imagining that people all love the place where they live.

Or, respondents provide more detailed information that challenges blanket statistics and addresses the complexity of the issue. In doing so, they suggest that out-of-towners be more thoughtful about their judgments about unfamiliar and nuanced places, lest their own whereabouts and circumstances be judged.

102 homicides this year to date. But, no, Milwaukee is not dangerous.

Can't tell if you're being facetious or not. I imagine someone who lives in a place such as Two Rivers would consider Milwaukee to be very very scary. For those of us who live here, not so much.

But he/she would be the only one.
I know two people that went there for grad degrees as they got free ride offers, one bailed fast, the other persevered but hated every minute of it. She is now a professor in Athens.

I think a lot of the fear of Milwaukee comes down to subtle/subconscious racism of those who grow up in the white suburbs. If you are not conducting illegal activity you should have no fear living here.

Thousands of homicides in the United States this year to date. When do you plan to move to Canada?

Yes and no. I grew up in the city, and you're absolutely right that there are a lot of people who grew up in the suburbs and have a completely irrational fear of going anywhere in Milwaukee. I often rolled my eyes at friends/relatives who were too scared to come for a visit, or to take certain streets through Milwaukee.

But on the other hand, you are more likely to be robbed, mugged, car jacked, etc. in some parts of Milwaukee - even if you are minding your own business and not getting into trouble - than you would be out in the suburbs. Is it likely to happen? No, not really. In 20+ years of living there and an equal number of visiting on a regular basis I've been robbed at gunpoint once and mugged twice. It isn't exactly an everyday - or even every year - thing, but it is more likely to happen in the city than in the burbs.

I do not need to move to Canada to avoid the likelihood of a homicide, just stay out of Milwaukee and its neighbor to the south.

It was just sooo nice to attend Irish Fest this summer, pay 20 bucks to park my car, only to return finding a window smashed in so someone could steal some spare change.

A. No one should ever keep anything in plain sight in their car. I keep nothing in my car.
B. I work in the worst part of the city, still have managed not to be murdered yet.
