Hi all! We are two thirty-somethings with 3 elementary-aged kids, considering a move from New Berlin to Cedarburg. We are zeroing in on Cedarburg because of the downtown, the festivals, the sidewalks, and the ability to walk to elementary schools, which we don’t have here.

My biggest concern though, is whether we will fit in and feel comfortable given the current political climate. I understand Ozaukee County is fairly conservative (feel free to correct me if I’m wrong), and I’m hoping to find a community that is relatively mixed. We fall on the left side of moderate, but in Covid-times we are very strict about wearing masks and social distancing. Are there others who feel similar, or will we stick out like a sore thumb?

Thank you in advance for your help!

You'll be fine, Most people who hate the mask mandate still follow the rules up here that includes me. People have a preconceived notion on what it's like in a more conservative area, oddly enough we seem to be the party now that preaches live and let live when that used to be a more democrat ideal things seem to have shifted. Most conservatives I know feel this way, I don't care what you do as long as it doesn't bother, go right ahead. Mask up and do what you feel you need to, nobody is going to bother you, just as long as you don't scoff or make a scene about people not wearing one.

Welcome to Ozaukee County where freedom still reigns.

It's been a while since I lived in the area, but even then Cedarburg and Mequon were viewed by some as conservative enclaves. We never found that to be the case, at least the people we interacted with never seemed to wear things on their sleeves, so to speak, or were judgmental.

Granted, things are far more polarized now, but I think you'll be fine. I think a lot of people have the attitude of the previous poster. I may not agree with you but I respect your right to do as you wish.

Sadly, suburban Milwaukee is the one metro area that has remained staunchly conservative.

There is so much wrong in that article...

Those counties never struck me as being overly racist, at least not any more than anywhere else, they just don't give in to political race-baiting.
One thing I've noticed about Milwaukee is the problem of over-politicization of race issues rather racism itself which doesn't help the sentiment of the suburbs any.
We live in a world where the goal-posts of racism haven't just been moved, they've been burned to ground so as to accommodate any baseless accusation of racism one can possibly conjure up.
