I live in New Berlin and have always thought our family was highish middle class considering the beautiful house we have. However, passing through Brookfield Square, my mom basically told me we New Berlin is a little cheap old hick town and Brookfield is where the true highish middle class folk live. She kept insulting new berlin as a cheap old hick garbage town, making it seem inferior to Brookfield? Is this true? Isn't it just that the people in Brookfield are dumber. Seems like we have the same type of beautiful house you could find in Brookfield only for cheaper. There behinds are just paying more. Could the same be said for us and Brown Deer? I hear Brown Deer has nice houses and is cheaper than New Berlin and all the areas!

I like this post, to explain how suburbs fall into place. The person who posted this hit the nail on the head in terms of the people who inhabit the suburbs.

In terms of income and educational attainment, both New Berlin and Brookfield have very middle class areas as well as solid upper-middle class areas. Brookfield is generally more prestigious than New Berlin, and Brookfield Town is generally more prestigious than Brookfield City.

What do you consider a "beautiful house"? If you're referring to the brick or stone "historic" houses (mostly modest, but also some mansions) from 1890-1940 with leaden windows, built-in wooden bookcases, curved and decorative moldings, and other such features, then you'll find more of such houses in Milwaukee, Wauwatosa, Shorewood, and Whitefish Bay. If you're referring more to estates with historic mansions, that's River Hills. If you're referring more to newish McMansion-type houses, you'll find them more in New Berlin, Brookfield, Mequon, Franklin, and Oak Creek. But it depends on what you really mean.

Some places with really beautiful historic homes aren't very prosperous these days--various neighborhoods of Milwaukee's west side, for example. Also, there are some prosperous communities with very humble and non-descript ranch homes--the wealthy communities of Bayside, Fox Point, Glendale, Whitefish Bay, and Shorewood, for example. In other words, the home itself doesn't always tell the whole story.
