So right now I live in Pewaukee with my wonderful dad. I attend UW-Milwaukee and since commuting is a bi*** and I'm ready to spread my wings and live on my own, I am hoping to get an apartment near campus this fall. Actually, not just hoping. I've been hoping the past three years, this time it's ACTUALLY HAPPENING

I'm trying to work out a budget but I have absolutely no idea where to start on some things. I'm going to probably be sharing the apartment with my fiance so we would need at least a 1-bedroom, but I'm seeing that some 2-bedrooms seem to be around the same price as a one bedroom. Looking around Craigslist and the UWM housing site, it looks like rent is anywhere from $500 - $1500.

We want to have enough room to be comfortable but we're far from rich, so we probably couldn't afford more than $500 each every month - so I'm trying to look in the $500-$700 range for rent in a 1-2 bedroom. Is this information accurate and would this idea be feasible? If not, what would be a decent price on an apartment in this area?

So while the rent cost is somewhat easy to determine, I'm lost on utilities. I've never lived on my own before and have no clue how much electricity, water, etc cost for an apartment. Can someone help me to shed some light on this? I'm going to assume that I won't find an apartment that pays for everything, just so that I'm prepared the in the 'worst case scenario'. How much would a person living on the east side expect to pay in utilities every month?

Also, any specific areas that would be recommended? I'd like to live as close to campus as possible so that I can walk to classes but am wondering if it would be cheaper or if there are other benefits to living a little further away from campus but still in Milwaukee. I could always use the bus.

I also have a car, am not sure what the parking situation is like for most places, although it looks like some apartments offer at least outdoor parking. Is this the norm?

Advice would be much appreciated!

I would say look in the 500-750 range, you should be able to find something that suits you. You will get what you pay for though in this price range in terms of size, they should be big enough for you.

Depends where you live but water is usually included and heat is usually included. If heat is not included I would not even bother with it b/c heat is very expensive. Most of the time you will have to pay for your own electric but it's not bad. For a small place it's usually around 30-40/mo. If you are a candle lover and a light Nazi you can get it even lower.

I recommend living within walking distance(less than a mile). It is just so much easier. However if you do live more than a mile away make sure you are as close to the #15 bus line or the #30. Those lines will take you right to school.

Good Luck.

I rented a place in college off of Oakland and I forgot the cross st. haha I think the address was 2466 or something. We had a nice 2/1 for like 800. Was like a 20 minute walk to school but for the price it was worth it.
