Whenever I go out to the Mall of America I always do the 6 to the light rail, it seems easier than the other options and you rarely have loud, annoying, crazy people on the bus like sometimes happens on the 21. The light rail is so much faster than the bus that it doesn't seem to matter much whether you get on it downtown or at lake st.
I'd strongly disagree with this. Taking it from downtown can easily add quite a bit from your commute. I won't disagree that some buses can be rowdier than others, but I've been on a train from Hennepin/Warehouse District Station (which is the one you'd get on with the 6 from Uptown) and it can easily take 15 minutes just to get through downtown with all the lights. That, plus all the stops just to catch up to where a bus headed straight to Lake St. or other stop would be simply adds time. It's another useful route to take, but I'd never go to downtown from Uptown for a quicker time on the light rail

It probably depends where in uptown you live. Where I am at is 2 blocks from the 6, the 4, and the 17 but Lake St is about a 15 minute walk. Those north south blocks are long. If I lived closer to Lake St the 21 would probably make more sense.

Why not look for an apartment in Downtown Mpls? Just as much to do, or more Downtown for a young, single guy. Save yourself the extra bus trip to-from every day. I'd be surprised if you're not waiting tables closer to your apartment within 6 months, as there are plenty of waiting jobs like that Downtown and/or Uptown. Buena suerte Carlos.
